Easy timesheets and reporting solution in SharePoint

A small nonprofit organization needed a better  process for time tracking and reporting. Our solution is to let users enter their time data into a SharePoint Online list by way of an InfoPath form. And we use Excel to display the data in a dashboard.

The organization has two paid employees and the rest are volunteers; the board also consists of volunteers. The paid staff registered their hours in an Excel file. The employees work irregularly and they get more money for work that they…

Beware of the ASP.NET SQL Membership Provider for your SharePoint Extranet…

If you’re exploring how to leverage Forms-based Authentication for your SharePoint Extranet, chances are you’ve run into the ASP.NET SQL Membership Provider. Aside from the MSDN link I just pointed to, you’ll probably find countless tutorials about it online, as well as a few open-source products (such as the CodePlex SharePoint FBA Pack) and other commercial products I won’t name here for…

Fun with SharePoint Calculated Columns

I recently had a client requirement to send out an automated company-wide birthday greeting email whenever it was someone’s birthday.  I decided to use SharePoint Designer to create a workflow that sends an email, and then run it on a timer job that runs nightly.  This timer job would pull all employees that have a birthday that day from a SharePoint list, then fire off the workflow for each birthday found.

No problem, that sort of thing I’ve done before.  They did have one…

Removing "Limited Access" permissions overrides item-level security settings in SharePoint

Here is one to chalk up to the “I-should-have-known-better” category.  The other day I needed to make some permissions changes to a SharePoint list, and the items within this list had special permissions (item-level security).  After making the necessary changes at the list level, I noticed that there were a lot of individual people in the list permissions with “Limited Access.”

Since I don’t like clutter, I thought I would just clean things up by removing the…

Unable to modify SharePoint 2013 web part properties

I ran into a weird issue while working with SharePoint 2013 the other day. I wasn’t able to edit the web part properties of any web parts on wiki pages. When highlighting a web part in Edit mode, the Web Part Properties box was greyed out, and also there was no checkbox in the upper right corner of the web part to select, only a minimize button. I was also logged in as the admin so I knew it wasn’t a permissions issue.…

Clever use of the Search Box web part in SharePoint 2010

This is something I stumbled on completely by accident, however it turns out that it’s a cool use of the Search Box web part.  Did you know that you could direct the Search Box web part to any page you wish, and it doesn’t have to be a standard SharePoint search results page?  In this post I will show you how I configured it to send the search query to a page containing a Business Connectivity Services (BCS) list as the target results page.

We have a search area at the top of our…

SharePoint Document Management - Facts about versioning

Main selling point

Versioning has always been one of the main selling points for SharePoint Document Management. At least, that's what I always use as an, there are more of course, argument for storing documents in SharePoint instead of file shares. While I was preparing my presentation about Best Practices: Document Management in SharePoint 2013 for SharePoint Connections Amsterdam 2013, I started to wonder if versioning worked as well as I thought it did. Let's take a closer…

Slides from SharePoint Saturday Chicago #spschicago

SharePoint Saturday Chicago was held at the Hard Rock Hotel in downtown Chicago on November 2, 2013.  There were some great speakers lined up, as well as the one and only Dux Raymond Sy (@meetdux) presented the keynote speech.  If you weren't able to make it in person, you can view his entire recorded presentation on UStream.

The organizers…

SharePoint - Create a link to export to Excel

For one of our customers I had to create dashboard with a few shortcuts to SharePoint actions. One of these actions is an export of a central SharePoint list to Excel. I thought it would be easier to add a link at the dashboard. Otherwise the end-users have to open the list and click two times in the ribbon. One click is always better than three ;)

This is the end result:…

The alternative for Meeting Workspaces in SharePoint 2013

Microsoft decided to deprecate Meeting Workspaces in Sharepoint 2013. These handy site templates are still widely used in SharePoint 2010 (SP2010). In this post I'm going to describe an alternative.

According to Microsoft, there are enough alternatives for Meeting Workspaces, they mention Lync meetings, OneNote, SP team sites or the My Site. I have looked at these alternatives, but these require a huge change in the way the end users work.…

Add Home and Back Button to the Search Result Page in SharePoint

by Ben Adams     Sep 11, 2013

So one of the annoying things about SharePoint 2010 and SharePoint 2013 is that once users get to the search result page, there is no way to go back to the previous page without clicking the browser back button.  Also, if you haven't done a little customization, you lose the typical navigation at the top and often can not return to the Portal Home page.  How can we remedy this?

The “My Groups” View

In SharePoint 2010/2013, there’s a cool little feature in task lists that lets you create a view that shows you all items assigned to any SharePoint groups that you’re a member of.  Even though it’s not as apparent in other lists, this post will show you how to accomplish it using SharePoint Designer.  This solution can be done in either SharePoint 2010 or 2013, with your corresponding version of SharePoint Designer.

  • Create a task list in SharePoint 2010 or…
